Solid colour drawstring bucket bag in black. Made from 100% fique grass, also known as Mexican agave fibre.
From Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the northeast of Colombia, the bags are woven by female members of the indigenous Kankuamo tribe.
Once the fique grass fibres have been extracted, they are washed and then bleached by the sun. The dye used to add different colourways come from local plants and tree barks ensuring the whole process is completely organic.
Whilst the fique mochila is a popular fashion accessory, to the Kankuomo they are culturally important traditions and integral to their way of life. The mochilas reflect the origin of life and pay homage to the snowy mountains they call their home. Their patterns reflect the animals that live in la Sierra Nevada, as well as the sun which provides the energy for plants to grow. Fique mochilas were also used as a currency. The Kankuamo would trade the mochila with other tribes in exchange for food, textiles, and other goods.
