Black coat from Turkmenistan, featuring floral Russian-printed cotton lining and hand-embroidery. The coat also features slight slits on either side.
‘Chapan’ coats such as this were traditionally worn by Turkoman and Afghan tribal communities ceremoniously. The delicate embroidery featured on the coat is indicative of the wearer’s social standing and is believed by some to protect the wearer from harm. The coat dates from the 1970s and is in pristine condition.
