Burgundy ikat coat with contrast hand-embroidered Suzani panels. Hand-dyed, hand-loomed and handmade by talented artisans in Uzbekistan, and finished in Turkey.
We source our Uzbek and Central Asian textiles from a wonderful Uzbek antique textile dealer in Istanbul. The exquisite silk and cotton ikats are the base of beautiful coats.
The Ikat fabric is a symbol of prestige in Uzbekistan's culture. The name ikat is of Indonesian origin and means 'to tie or bind'. In Uzbekistan, the local name for ikat comes from the Persian word 'abr', which means 'cloud', as the patterns on the fabrics often resemble clouds floating in the sky and reflected in the water.
Ikat is a resist-dye weaving process, where bundles of unwoven threads are bound tightly and intricately in certain places to prevent the dye from adhering to those areas, and hand-dyed, often by ikat masters. The dyed threads are then threaded onto the loom to be woven into colourful and unique ikat fabrics.
The unique ikat fabrics are then sewn and finished into one-of-a-kind coats that are meant to last for years to come.
