This printed 100% organic cotton kaftan features delicate traditional Lucknowi hand-embroidery.

The print is inspired by a Bakhtiari carpet and represents the Persian garden of paradise, the utopia of an earthly heaven that spread through ancient Persian literature, art and architecture. The Cypress trees represent the afterlife, roses represent innocence, the lotus represents rebirth, the tulip is for prosperity and the star represents mysticism.

These beautiful kaftans are made from organic cotton that is traditionally handwoven and hand-loomed in one of the last remaining traditional mills of its kind in South India. Muzungu Sisters continues to value and champion hand-embroidery, which is sadly a dying art.

Our organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment with systems in place to replenish and sustain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilisers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Cotton crops aren't treated with pesticides, insecticides, herbicides. Our organic cotton is GMO free.

Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other crop in the world. These Pesticides and insecticides used in cotton production contaminate the soil we use to grow crops, the air we breathe and the water we drink. The deaths of animals exposed to these contaminants is counted in the millions every year. The damage caused to us and the environment by growing non-organic cotton is enormous and is a real threat to us and our planet!

MADE BY

Artisans from South Africa and India

The Bakhtiari collection was ethically made in South African and India. The embroidery on all of our pieces is done entirely by hand by talented embroiderers in Lucknow and Mumbai, India. We continue to value and champion hand-embroidery, which is sadly a dying art due to the increase in popularity of machine-embroidery.

The cotton used in the Bakhtiari collection is organic cotton that is traditionally handwoven, hand-loomed in one of the last remaining traditional mills of its kind in South India. The silks are sustainable, with OEKO-tex certification and cut and embroidered in India.
