Handwoven earth-toned mochila bucket bag, made with 100% sheep wool.
These wool mochilas are handwoven for us by indigenous women weavers of the Arhuaco tribe of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range in Colombia.
Although the whole Arhuaco tribe is involved in the production of mochilas, only Wati (Arhuaco women) can weave the bags together according to custom. Traditionally, the women learn to weave from an early age by watching their mothers, and when they are ready to weave their first mochila, this is given to the priest as an offering for the rituals of the life cycle.
Unfortunately, as the popularity of these mochilas has increased worldwide, so has the number of machine-made imitations - usually not even produced in Colombia. Our Arhuaca mochilas are authentic Colombian handmade labours of love. Symbols of wildlife and nature from the weaver's cosmology can be found on each bag the women weave.
